On May 20, 2010, the IV Moscow International Festival of Arts “Traditions and Modernity ” – one of the brightest and most interesting events in the cultural life of the capital – was solemnly opened in Crocus Expo IEC. This year the Festival was attended by painters, sculptors, photographers, graphic artists, architects, masters of applied art, museums and galleries from different countries of the world and regions of Russia.
In 2010 the Festival was held at a new venue – Crocus Expo IEC – one of the largest economic and industrial exhibition centers in Moscow today. “Traditions and Modernity” was the first event in the field of culture and art to master this venue, thus showing that the cultural life of the capital can take place far beyond the city.
The opening ceremony began with the traditional cutting of the red ribbon, after which the participants and guests were greeted by the following speakers T.T. Salakhov – Chairman of the international jury of the festival, People’s Artist of the USSR, Russia and Azerbaijan, winner of the State Prizes of the USSR and Azerbaijan, Vice-President of the Russian Academy of Arts; O.B. Yesipovskaya – Special Projects Advisor to the Chairman of the Federation Council, S.M. Mironov; V.N. Kiseleva – organizer of the annual festival “Traditions and Modernity”, President of the Moscow Public Foundation for Support of Culture and Development of Contemporary Art; George Petrescu – UNESCO expert; V.M. Zaitsev – Fashion designer, painter, photographer, theatrical costume designer, corresponding member of the Russian Academy of Arts; N.P. Aniridze – Vice-President of the International Guild of Professional Media Photographers of Russia. During the ceremony the Chief Scientific Secretary of the Presidium of the Russian Academy of Arts O.A. Koshkin and Head of the Protocol Department of the RAH L.A. Zapylayeva awarded the People’s Artist of Russia, a recognized master of landscape painting M.G. Abakumov – to the participant of the Festival – a sign and a certificate of corresponding member of the Russian Academy of Arts.
The guests of the ceremony enjoyed watching the performances of young artists – pupils of orphanages and boarding schools, who prepared bright musical numbers for the opening of the Festival. The IV Festival was marked by the participation of a large number of young talents (A. Berezovskaya, A. Oll, E. Infelitsina, “Project Academy” and many others). However, no less important and even more honorable for the organizers is the opportunity to show the public the works of famous masters (T. Salakhov, Z. Tsereteli, E. Zverikova, A. Burganova, M. Abakumova), who embody rich traditions and set an example of selfless work and devotion to art. One of the distinctive features of the IV Festival was the holding of special projects reflecting the current processes in society, dedicated to events of great importance for the country and the world as a whole. First of all, we are talking about the project “Eternal Memory”, which presented the works of artists – Veterans of the Great Patriotic War (S. Altayev, G. Sotskov, I. Radoman, A. Plastov, etc.). Another project called “Window to Paris” was timed to coincide with the Year of Russia in France and France in Russia announced in 2010.
